In celebration of Women’s History Month, leaders and advocates gathered at the Alzheimer’s Los Angeles Women’s Visionary Afternoon Tea to honor individuals shaping the fight against Alzheimer’s. Among them was Petra Niles, a dedicated advocate who has spent over a decade empowering families and caregivers navigating dementia care.
Attorney Caprice L. Collins attended to honor her longtime friend and fellow champion, Petra Niles. Both have worked tirelessly to ensure families, particularly in the Black community, are protected against life’s most difficult transitions. Their advocacy in health, wealth protection, and legacy-building has provided countless families with critical knowledge and resources.
Women: The Silent Protectors of Legacies
Women are the backbone of caregiving. Two-thirds of Alzheimer’s caregivers are women, balancing jobs, children, and their own health while caring for aging loved ones. They ensure family legacies endure but often at great personal cost. This event served as both a celebration and a call to action—caregivers deserve support and financial security.
With twelve years of leadership, Petra Niles has transformed Alzheimer’s Los Angeles into a hub of education and support. She believes in engaging younger generations in the fight against Alzheimer’s, ensuring lasting awareness and proactive planning.
The Dementia Directive: A Crucial Step in Legacy Planning
California’s Dementia Directive is reshaping how families plan for the future, allowing individuals to outline their end-of-life care, medical treatment, and living preferences should they develop dementia.
Attorney Collins, a pioneer in estate planning, has been at the forefront of integrating dementia planning into estate strategies, ensuring families navigate long-term care, asset protection, and generational wealth transfer with confidence.
“Too often, families wait until it’s too late,” Attorney Collins said. “The Dementia Directive empowers individuals to make choices that honor their life’s work and values.”
A Heartfelt Thank You
This event would not have been possible without the dedicated committee members who continue to drive Alzheimer’s Los Angeles’ mission forward, ensuring families are informed and supported.
As the afternoon concluded, the stories shared and the tributes given reinforced one truth: protecting families and preserving legacies is a lifelong mission. With leaders like Petra Niles and Attorney Collins at the helm, the future remains in compassionate, capable hands.
