Clarence B. Jones and the Father’s Day Question Every Dad Has to Answer

May 27, 2026Generational Wealth

Some fathers leave behind more than a moment

Estimated read time: ~6 minutes.

Father’s Day is usually framed as appreciation.

A tie. A cookout. A phone call you promise yourself you’ll make earlier next year.

But some fathers leave behind more than a moment.

They leave behind a structure so strong it outlives them—so the people they love don’t get swallowed by chaos when the worst day arrives.

This June, as we talk about fatherhood and legacy, one name deserves a pause:

Clarence B. Jones.

Jones wasn’t just near history—he helped write it. The Associated Press reports that he was a confidante and speechwriter for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., helping pen the “I Have a Dream” speech. He also served as King’s personal attorney and was involved in key civil rights moments, including helping smuggle pages of “Letter from Birmingham Jail” out of King’s cell, and helping craft King’s 1967 “Beyond Vietnam” speech at Riverside Church.

Jones died at 95, according to AP, and his family described him as a man who lived “a life of conscience.”

That phrase—life of conscience—is exactly what Father’s Day should be about.

Because a father’s real legacy isn’t only what he earned.

It’s what he protected.

And asset protection is a fatherhood decision.

Not because dads are paranoid. Because dads understand something the world keeps pretending isn’t true:

You can do everything right and still get hit.

A medical crisis.
A lawsuit.
Cognitive decline.
A business claim.
A sudden death.
A family conflict that shows up the week after the funeral.

And when the hit comes, your family doesn’t need motivational quotes.

They need authority. Access. Structure.

They need a plan that works under pressure.

Clarence B. Jones understood something most fathers learn late

The work doesn’t end when you build the thing.

The work ends when the thing is safe.

Jones didn’t just support Dr. King in public moments. AP notes he was part of the legal team on New York Times v. Sullivan—a case where the U.S. Supreme Court overturned a libel judgment against the newspaper after it ran an ad about police treatment of civil rights demonstrators. (That case is why free speech protections are what they are today.)

Jones also lived a long arc of leadership: after King’s death, he worked in investment banking and became the first Black American with “allied member” designation at the New York Stock Exchange, later taught at the University of San Francisco, co-founded an Institute for Nonviolence and Social Justice, and served as scholar-in-residence at Stanford’s MLK Research and Education Institute. AP says he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from then-President Joe Biden.

That’s a legacy built across decades.

But here’s what makes it a Father’s Day lesson for men in Los Angeles:

Legacy isn’t a highlight reel.

Legacy is the invisible protection that keeps your family from being forced into a corner.

A dad who provides but doesn’t protect can still leave his family exposed to:

  • probate delays
  • frozen accounts
  • a forced sale of the home
  • lawsuits reaching personal assets
  • family conflict about “who’s in charge”
  • scammers targeting grief and confusion

In L.A., where the home is often the largest family asset, that exposure is not theoretical.

It’s the difference between “we’ll keep the house” and “we had to sell.”

✅ On Demand (if you can’t attend June 10)

If you can’t make it in person, start with the On Demand seminar and get the framework first—privately, on your time:

The fatherhood move is not “I handle it.” It’s “I made it handleable.”

Men in Inglewood and across Los Angeles carry a quiet pressure:

Be strong.
Be stable.
Be the one who figures it out.

But the truth is: if you are the only person who knows how the system works—passwords, accounts, insurance, mortgage, taxes—you are also the single point of failure.

That is not strength.

That is risk.

Asset protection starts by building a system that still works if you can’t speak, can’t sign, or can’t manage:

  • a properly funded living trust so your assets aren’t trapped in court timelines
  • durable powers of attorney so your spouse isn’t blocked when bills are due
  • healthcare directives + HIPAA so decisions don’t become arguments
  • successor decision-makers (and backups) so the plan doesn’t collapse if one person can’t serve
  • aligned beneficiary designations so “what you meant” matches “what happens”
  • a Letter of Instructions so your family isn’t hunting for documents while grieving

This is what dads should be celebrated for: making sure their family doesn’t have to fight two wars at once—loss and logistics.

Jones leaves a question for every father

If your voice disappeared tomorrow… would your family still have direction?

Jones helped put words on paper that reshaped a nation. He understood that a message matters—but only if it can be carried forward.

That’s what estate planning is for dads.

It’s taking what you built—home equity, retirement, business value, stability—and placing it inside a structure that can withstand:

  • time
  • illness
  • conflict
  • court delays
  • and the very human reality that families are emotional when they’re scared

A father’s legacy is not only what he left.

It’s what he prevented: preventable fights, preventable losses, preventable court entanglements, preventable exposure.

✅ On Demand (share with your family)

If you want to watch together—spouse, adult kids, siblings—use the On Demand access page and let the education carry the conversation:

Testimonials

Client Review
August 19, 2020

“My mother told me about the Collins Law Group and I must say, the entire experience has been a real pleasure. Although I was nervous at first, the Collins Law Group staff put me at ease with their friendliness and knowledge. I didn’t realize how hard it could be on your family and loved ones left behind if you die without any planning or directions in place for them. My biggest concern was making sure my elderly mother would be provided for and taken care of if something happened to me. I have been a caregiver for her for 12 years, so this planning was crucially important. I had previously made a living trust for myself on Legal Zoom but there is no comparison to the level of service and professionalism that Collins Law Group embodies. Attorney Collins and her staff provides excellent service and it will take a large burden off of my family when they need guidance at the time of my passing.”
