Reverend James M. Lawson Jr., who passed away last week at 95, was an unparalleled figure in the civil rights movement and the long-time pastor of Holman United Methodist Church in Los Angeles. His legacy, marked by nonviolent resistance and the relentless pursuit of justice, resonates deeply as we celebrate Juneteenth.
As a friend of Reverend Lawson, who I met at my visits to Holman United Methodist Church, I am deeply moved by his enduring impact. His life and work have significantly shaped our history, showing the power one person has in advancing justice and equality.

Reverend Lawson was a master teacher, inspired by his studies with Gandhi in India. He trained countless activists in nonviolent civil disobedience, including during the Nashville lunch counter sit-ins and the Freedom Rides. His emphasis on discipline and respect in the face of hostility is a lasting lesson.
As we commemorate Juneteenth, Reverend Lawson’s life reminds us of the ongoing struggle for true freedom and equality. This day not only celebrates the end of slavery but also calls us to reflect on the continuing fight against racism, sexism, and economic inequality—what Reverend Lawson called “the poisons of racism, sexism, violence, and plantation capitalism.”

To honor Rev. Lawson is to embrace his unwavering commitment to justice, his passion for truth, and his peaceful resolve. As we reflect on Juneteenth, let us draw inspiration from his life, recognizing that the path to true freedom is paved with courage, empathy, and an unyielding quest for justice. Reverend Lawson’s life teaches us that, even in times of fear and uncertainty, the pursuit of justice and belief in a better world must never waver.
In this spirit, I urge you to consider preserving your own legacy. Just as Reverend Lawson’s contributions are cherished, it is crucial to protect your values, stories, and assets for future generations. A comprehensive estate plan is not just a legal necessity; it is a way to safeguard the history and legacy you leave behind.
