When the Bills Stop Making Sense: Early Alzheimer’s, Silent Financial Danger, and How to Protect the Home You Built

Evelyn Johnson sat at her kitchen table with three different notices spread out in front of her.

“Past due.”
“Account suspended.”
“Final notice before collections.”

Her daughter, Monique, watched her trace the words with her finger like they belonged to someone else. Evelyn worked thirty-five years at a hospital in Culver City, raised three kids, bought a modest home, and kept every bill paid on time. Now the water bill confused her. The bank app startled her. The numbers no longer lined up in her mind.

“This isn’t like you, Mom,” Monique said.

Evelyn smiled and shrugged. “These companies change everything all the time. I’ll figure it out.”

But she didn’t.

When money stops making sense

In living rooms from Inglewood to Culver City, families notice the same quiet shift long before anyone says “Alzheimer’s.”

The person who once balanced every bank statement starts:

  • Forgetting to pay property taxes.
  • Ignoring insurance notices.
  • Paying the same bill twice.
  • Trusting strangers who call about “urgent account issues.”

Loved ones see it first. They see the unopened mail, the odd cash withdrawals, the new credit cards. They hear the same question three times in one night:

“Did I already pay that?”

These changes don’t mean a diagnosis by themselves. But they often show up early in Alzheimer’s and other memory disorders. They also put decades of hard work and home equity at risk if the family doesn’t act.

If you see even the beginnings of this in your own family, you don’t need to guess what to do next. Collins Law Group invites you to sit down in person on December 9 for their Wills, Living Trusts & Asset Protection Seminar, where they explain how to protect a loved one’s finances and legacy before a crisis hits: (Limited Seating Available)

“Dad doesn’t sound like Dad anymore.”

Across town in Culver City, Marcus picked up his father’s phone and scanned the call log.

Dozens of unknown numbers. Several from the same “investment consultant.” A few from “tech support.”

His father, a retired postal worker, always prided himself on spotting a scam. He once warned everyone on the block about shady door-to-door salespeople. This year, he wired money to a stranger—twice.

At Thanksgiving, he snapped at Marcus when he tried to help.

“I’m fine. I’ve handled my money longer than you’ve been alive.”

But the bank account told a different story. So did the late mortgage notices and the missing savings.

Marcus didn’t just feel afraid of Alzheimer’s. He felt afraid of what would happen to the house, the little bit of retirement left, and his father’s dignity if he waited too long.

Awareness isn’t enough. You need a plan.

Families in Inglewood and Culver City care deeply. They notice small changes. They search for articles like this one. They whisper to siblings and cousins about “something feeling off.”

But awareness without action leaves the door wide open to:

  • Financial exploitation and scams.
  • Missed deadlines on mortgages, taxes, and insurance.
  • Court battles over who controls money and medical decisions.
  • A lifetime of savings lost in a few confusing years.

Collins Law Group, proud ambassadors of Alzheimer’s Los Angeles, see this every week. They meet families after someone forgets to sign a power of attorney, after a parent signs a predatory loan, after a house slides toward foreclosure because no one stepped in soon enough.

You don’t need to wait for that moment. You can learn exactly how to step in legally and lovingly at the December 9 In-Person Wills, Living Trusts & Asset Protection Seminar, designed for caregivers, adult children, and aging parents who want to stay in control: (Limited Seating Available)

Where estate planning meets memory loss

When memory starts to slip, money follows. Estate planning bridges that gap.

A living trust lets a trusted person manage assets when confusion sets in, without dragging the family through a public, slow court process. Carefully drafted powers of attorney and healthcare directives give a chosen decision-maker legal authority to:

  • Pay bills on time.
  • Refuse suspicious loans and contracts.
  • Coordinate with doctors and insurance companies.
  • Protect a vulnerable person from financial predators.

This isn’t about swooping in and taking control. It’s about honoring who your loved one always was: the person who worked hard, paid their way, bought a home, and wanted to leave something behind.

When you build a proper estate plan before Alzheimer’s progresses, you don’t erase your loved one’s voice—you preserve it.

ON TUESDAY, December 9, Collins Law Group walks through real-life Los Angeles scenarios—just like Evelyn’s and Marcus’s families—and shows how the right documents turn panic into a clear, step-by-step roadmap. You can reserve a seat and bring the person you worry about most: (Limited Seating Available)

The power of a Letter of Instructions

Legal documents answer the question, “Who has authority?”

A Letter of Instructions answers a different, equally important question: “What matters most?”

Unlike a will or trust, a Letter of Instructions doesn’t usually go to court. It sits with your estate plan and speaks straight from you to the people you love. For a family facing early Alzheimer’s signs, it can include:

  • Which bills auto-debit and which arrive by mail.
  • Bank accounts, safe deposit boxes, and key contacts.
  • Passwords, logins, and where you keep important records.
  • Wishes about staying at home, moving in with family, or choosing a facility.
  • The story behind certain heirlooms and gifts, so your legacy carries meaning, not just dollar signs.

When Evelyn and Monique finally sat with an attorney, Monique wept with relief as her mother dictated that letter—who should receive which pictures, what church meant the most to her, why she refused to sell the house if anyone could save it.

Alzheimer’s steals clarity. A Letter of Instructions steals some of that power back. It becomes the voice your family hears when you can’t find the right words anymore.

At the December 9 seminar, (Limited Seating Available) Collins Law Group not only explains trusts and powers of attorney—they also show families how to create a powerful Letter of Instructions that ties everything together: legal protections, financial details, and the heartbeat of your story. You can learn how to write that letter in a way your future self and your children will thank you for:

Love looks like preparation

In Inglewood, Monique now handles the bills. Evelyn still lights the candles, tells stories, and hums along to old songs. The disease changed their daily lives, but it didn’t erase the legacy Evelyn built. The trust and Letter of Instructions guard it.

In Culver City, Marcus now sits with his dad when the mail comes. They open everything together. The son leads the way with the bank and the lawyers, and the father leads the way with the stories behind every sacrifice that paid for that small house.

Early signs of Alzheimer’s feel terrifying. You notice the financial slipups and feel a wave of panic. You don’t need to stay in that panic. You can turn it into a plan.

If you see even a hint of these signs—a parent who suddenly struggles with simple money tasks, a loved one who falls for scams, a stack of unpaid bills—treat that moment as a gift. It gives you time. Use that time.

Sit down with people who understand both Alzheimer’s and estate planning. Learn how to shield the home, the savings, and the legacy that took a lifetime to build.

Start with one concrete step: register for Collins Law Group’s In-Person Wills, Living Trusts & Asset Protection Seminar on December 9 (Limited Seating Available) and bring your questions, your fears, and your love for your family:

Testimonials

Client Review
August 19, 2020

“My mother told me about the Collins Law Group and I must say, the entire experience has been a real pleasure. Although I was nervous at first, the Collins Law Group staff put me at ease with their friendliness and knowledge. I didn’t realize how hard it could be on your family and loved ones left behind if you die without any planning or directions in place for them. My biggest concern was making sure my elderly mother would be provided for and taken care of if something happened to me. I have been a caregiver for her for 12 years, so this planning was crucially important. I had previously made a living trust for myself on Legal Zoom but there is no comparison to the level of service and professionalism that Collins Law Group embodies. Attorney Collins and her staff provides excellent service and it will take a large burden off of my family when they need guidance at the time of my passing.”
