Women, Alzheimer’s & Community Awareness: Why Women’s History Month Is a Time to Talk About Brain Health

March 17, 2026Uncategorized

Every March, Women’s History Month invites us to celebrate the leadership, resilience, and impact of women across every part of society—from science and medicine to community advocacy and caregiving. It is also an important time to elevate awareness around a health issue that touches millions of families nationwide: Alzheimer’s disease.

Alzheimer’s is more than memory loss. It is a progressive brain disorder that affects thinking, behavior, and the ability to perform everyday activities. And when we look closely at the numbers, it becomes clear that women are especially connected to this issue.

Today, more than 6.9 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease, and nearly two-thirds of them are women. That means approximately 4.2 million women in the United States are currently living with Alzheimer’s, compared with about 2.7 million men.

Researchers continue to explore why women are affected at higher rates. One factor is longevity—women statistically live longer than men, and age remains the greatest risk factor for Alzheimer’s. However, scientists are also examining biological and hormonal influences. For example, estrogen plays an important role in brain health, and the hormonal shifts that occur during menopause may affect how the brain ages. In addition, genetic factors such as the APOE-e4 gene appear to increase Alzheimer’s risk more significantly in women than in men.

Yet women are not only more likely to develop Alzheimer’s—they are also more likely to become caregivers.

Across the United States, nearly 60% of Alzheimer’s and dementia caregivers are women. Daughters, spouses, sisters, and granddaughters frequently step into caregiving roles, often balancing careers, raising children, and managing households while supporting a loved one experiencing cognitive decline.

In many cases, caregiving responsibilities can span years and involve significant emotional, physical, and financial commitment.

The conversation becomes even more important when examining how Alzheimer’s affects Black and Hispanic communities.

Studies show that Black Americans are about twice as likely to develop Alzheimer’s or other dementias compared to older white Americans, while Hispanic Americans are approximately 1.5 times more likely to develop the disease.

For women within these communities, the impact can be especially significant. Black and Hispanic women often play central roles in family caregiving while also facing higher prevalence of health conditions associated with dementia risk, including hypertension, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.

Barriers such as limited access to early screenings, cultural stigma surrounding dementia, and lack of awareness around brain health can also delay diagnosis and support. By the time many families seek help, the disease may already be in advanced stages.

This is why education, awareness, and early planning are critical.

Understanding Alzheimer’s risk factors, recognizing early warning signs, and preparing legally and financially for potential long-term care can help families navigate the journey with greater clarity and stability.

At The Collins Law Group, empowering families through education and preparation is a core part of the firm’s community mission. Through educational seminars and outreach initiatives, the firm helps families better understand the legal and planning considerations that often accompany aging and cognitive decline.

Planning ahead—through tools such as wills, living trusts, powers of attorney, and asset protection strategies—can help families avoid unnecessary stress and ensure that loved ones receive the care and support they need.

In recognition of Women’s History Month and Alzheimer’s awareness, The Collins Law Group is inviting the community to take part in an upcoming educational opportunity designed to help families start these important conversations.

Share the Resource

Alzheimer’s affects entire families and communities. Sharing educational resources with parents, siblings, friends, and caregivers can help ensure more people understand the importance of early awareness and preparation.

Women have long been leaders in caregiving, healthcare advocacy, and community support. During Women’s History Month, it is fitting to recognize the extraordinary role women play in confronting Alzheimer’s—from researchers searching for breakthroughs to caregivers providing daily compassion and strength.

Through awareness, education, and preparation, families can face the future with greater confidence—and ensure that every loved one navigating Alzheimer’s is met with dignity, support, and hope.

Testimonials

Client Review
August 19, 2020

“My mother told me about the Collins Law Group and I must say, the entire experience has been a real pleasure. Although I was nervous at first, the Collins Law Group staff put me at ease with their friendliness and knowledge. I didn’t realize how hard it could be on your family and loved ones left behind if you die without any planning or directions in place for them. My biggest concern was making sure my elderly mother would be provided for and taken care of if something happened to me. I have been a caregiver for her for 12 years, so this planning was crucially important. I had previously made a living trust for myself on Legal Zoom but there is no comparison to the level of service and professionalism that Collins Law Group embodies. Attorney Collins and her staff provides excellent service and it will take a large burden off of my family when they need guidance at the time of my passing.”
