The Men at the Summer Table

July 1, 2026Estate Planning

There is something about summer that brings the family back into one place.

Estimated read time: ~4 minutes.

Not always gracefully. Not always on time. But somehow, by late afternoon, they arrive.

The cousins come through the door loud. Someone brings too much food. Someone forgets the ice. Children run through the yard like the whole world belongs to them. The grill becomes the center of gravity. Folding chairs appear from nowhere. The older men take their places in the shade.

And if you watch closely, you see it.

The fathers, grandfathers, uncles, brothers, stepfathers, and father figures are doing what they have always done.

They are watching the family.

Not dramatically. Not with speeches.

They are checking who looks tired. Who seems different. Who brought a new girlfriend. Who needs help carrying something. Who is pretending everything is fine when it is not.

That is one of the quiet roles men often play in families.

They observe. They absorb. They carry.

But the question summer gatherings ask, if we are brave enough to hear it, is this:

Who carries the family when that man no longer can?

🚨 July 8 Seminar (VERY LIMITED SEATING)

If summer gatherings remind you how much your family depends on you, join the July 8th In-Person Wills, Living Trusts & Asset Protection Seminar. Learn how to protect your home, avoid unnecessary probate, and create a plan that keeps your family grounded.

🚨 VERY LIMITED SEATING:

In many families, legacy is not discussed formally.

It shows up in small instructions.

“Don’t let the house fall behind.”
“Take care of your mother.”
“Put something away.”
“Family doesn’t mean everybody gets to act foolish.”
“Keep the kids together.”
“Call your brother.”

Men pass down wisdom in fragments.

Over a grill.
In a driveway.
During a ride home.
At a kitchen table after everyone else has gone outside.

But wisdom needs structure.

Because one day, the family may know exactly what Dad believed and still have no legal authority to carry it out.

They may know he wanted the house protected, but the house was never put in the trust.

They may know he wanted his spouse cared for, but the accounts are frozen.

They may know which child he trusted to handle things, but no power of attorney was signed.

They may know his values, but not where the documents are.

That is where families get hurt.

Not because there was no love.

Because love was never turned into a plan.

✅ On Demand (if you can’t attend July 8)

If you cannot attend in person, begin privately with the On Demand seminar and get the framework before your family needs it:

Summer holidays have a way of revealing what matters.

The family home.
The people who always show up.
The recipes nobody wrote down.
The stories about grandparents.
The laughter that sounds like childhood coming back for a few hours.

But the same gathering also reveals responsibility.

Who owns the home?
Who can act if something happens?
Who would make medical decisions?
Who would pay bills during incapacity?
Who knows where the insurance policies are?
Who understands what should happen if the family leader is suddenly unavailable?

These questions are not cold.

They are protective.

A man who loves his family does not wait for a crisis to make them guess.

He gives them clarity before they need it.

A living trust can help keep the home out of unnecessary probate. A durable power of attorney can give someone trusted the ability to manage finances during incapacity. A healthcare directive can prevent arguments in a hospital hallway. Updated beneficiary designations can make sure assets pass the way they should.

And a Letter of Instructions can do what legal documents cannot fully do.

It can carry a man’s voice.

It can say where things are. Who to call. What accounts exist. What bills are automatic. What personal items matter. What he wants remembered. What values should guide the family when emotions are high.

That kind of letter is not just paperwork.

It is wisdom written down.

✅ On Demand (share with family)

If your family needs a calm starting point for this conversation, share the On Demand access page and watch together:

The summer table is more than a meal.

It is a reminder.

The family is still here. The home still matters. The children are watching. The next generation is listening, even when it looks like they are not.

And the men in the family — fathers, grandfathers, uncles, brothers, stepfathers, mentors — have an opportunity to do something lasting.

Not just to tell the family what matters.

To protect it.

At Collins Law Group, we believe legacy planning is one of the most meaningful ways a man can continue showing up for his family.

Because one day, the grill will be handled by someone else. The stories will be told by someone else. The children will become the adults sitting in the shade.

The question is whether they will inherit confusion — or clarity.

Conflict — or structure.

A house full of memories — or a protected legacy.

🚨 Final July 8 Seminar Nudge (VERY LIMITED SEATING)

This summer, while the family is gathered, let the conversation become protection.

If your home, your family, and your legacy deserve a plan, reserve your seat for July 8 now.

Testimonials

Client Review
August 19, 2020

“My mother told me about the Collins Law Group and I must say, the entire experience has been a real pleasure. Although I was nervous at first, the Collins Law Group staff put me at ease with their friendliness and knowledge. I didn’t realize how hard it could be on your family and loved ones left behind if you die without any planning or directions in place for them. My biggest concern was making sure my elderly mother would be provided for and taken care of if something happened to me. I have been a caregiver for her for 12 years, so this planning was crucially important. I had previously made a living trust for myself on Legal Zoom but there is no comparison to the level of service and professionalism that Collins Law Group embodies. Attorney Collins and her staff provides excellent service and it will take a large burden off of my family when they need guidance at the time of my passing.”
